Leveraging whatever it is ...

I've been thinking about ways in which we can use this site to leverage whatever it is that we have going for us. Here's one possibility:

I've got research for half a dozen stories partially finished, but not getting anywhere. For reasons I can't get into here, nothing will happen with any of them unless I can recruit some assistance. So here's your chance!

If you're interested in throwing some time and energy into one or more of these projects, any of which could wind up being really depressing, speak up.

006

Hey!! I'm in! I'm a member! I'm number 6!! Rock ON!! That's so cool!!

Many thanks to NJT for setting up this site -- which opens up some really interesting possibilities! -- and for all his support, here and elsewhere. And thanks to everybody else who has been supportive in one way or another -- helping me to hang tough in difficult times.

But number 6 is so cool! That was my number when I was in spy-school. As you probably know (but may not realize), I could have been famous; but I got there too soon. Yes, yes, it's a little-known fact: I was in line just before Bond -- James Bond! And I was depressed about this for a while (many years, in fact), but it turned out that some things are more valuable than fame and fortune! Who would have guessed? Anyway, I am thrilled to be number 6 here. How about that? Will miracles never cease??

Bring on the evil creeps so we can flay them! And best wishes to everybody else.

Big Brother Is Watching - Microsoft Is Helping

I got a new laptop for Christmas which of course was loaded with Windows Vista. The other computers in my house all run XP.
I stumbled upon this article today and it has me wondering if I need to make a change.

Does Windows Vista Send Information to the Government?
by Bill Lindner on 20070726 @ 00:13AM EST | google it | send to friends
Channel: Windows | Bill's Links and More | (related terms: vista, network)
http://www.infopackets.com/channels/en/windows/bills_links_and_more/2007...

Is there more to Windows Vista being big brother than was originally thought? There appear to be features and services bundled into Windows Vista that stay in touch with the government and their associates, too.

If this is true, Microsoft has gone too far. This post was in an abandonia.com forum, and appeared to get overloaded from all the attention it was getting. Whitedust.net had a copy of it on their site.

A forum user switched to Windows Vista a month ago and actually had some good luck with it. He began noticing latency on his home network connection. He used port sniffing software and networking tools to see what was going on. What he found he referred to as "foundation shaking." There are some graphical images of a peerguardian 2 log with some very interesting information. The computer was in an idle state.

It shows the computer connected to the following (in his own words):
* DoD Network Information Center (Department of Defense)
* United Nations Development Program (Seems to correlate to the parent branch of the U.N. Informatics Division)
* Halliburton Company (We all know these guys)
* Ministry of Defense Data Return Agent
* DOHS-Recon (traceroutes for this address provided nothing, suspected blocks on traceroute. Many of us who are monitoring this situation have suspected the acronym stands for the Department of Homeland Security Reconnaissance. This is merely a guess, but an educated one at that)

I ran traceroutes on the IP's, and sure enough they came back government owned. I thought this might be exclusive to my system, so I ran over to a friend of mine who upgraded to Vista when it first became available. After installing monitoring software on his system, the hits it caught on his network were immediate and almost identical in source.

Is there anyone in the abandonia community with a US based connection who is experiencing this watchdog behavior? Are any foreign Vista users experiencing similar attacks from their own countries ministries and governing agencies?

It would be interesting to see how common this is. If Microsoft is doing this to all their Windows Vista consumers, it's time to take a long hard look at how they do things.

9/11 Protestor Arrested

Here we go... protesting 9/11 and locked up for...?

CORPUS CHRISTI — Police detained a protester at an early morning campaign stop by former President Bill Clinton.

The unidentified man had been holding a sign saying that 9/11 was in inside job. After Clinton finished his speech and was shaking hands with the crowd, the man began yelling at the former president, who was campaigning for his wife Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential run.

Police approached the man. When officers were nearby, a member of the crowd grabbed the sign and tore it in half. The man began screaming at officers, asking them to protect his First Amendment rights. Four police officers then yanked the man from the crowd. He was later placed in handcuffs and led away to a patrol car.

An officer at the scene said the man would be charged with disorderly conduct.

And the guy who tore the sign? No, you see, that wasn't disorderly.

Blog Notes

I'm still learning as we go here.
I don't know about you, but that old Winter Patriot look sure makes me feel at home.
I haven't figured out how to get that deep blue background, but at least I've got the blog post colors going...
Here are some instructions for doing it so anyone who wants can join in.

Below your post is an option for 'input format' - you may need to set it to 'smilies' to get certain things to work (some of the smilies)

At the top of your post, paste the table tag as follows:

Note: You do NOT need the < br /> tag, I just can't figure out why it's showing up or how to get rid of it! If you do include it, it won't really hurt anything; just will add an extra line break.

Then to begin a green table; paste this:

Wherever you want the green table to end, paste;

and paste the same at the very bottom of your post so you don't end up with a run-on table wink

hope this is helpful.
P.S. you can now shrink your sig with font tags like this:

And I've enabled avatars, go to "My Account" and click on edit to upload an avatar image rockin out

Geneticist Creating Life Form

This is interesting ... made me go "hmmmm" ... & wonder if this is a good thing or a scary thing.

Famed geneticist creating life form that turns CO2 to fuel
Thu Feb 28, 3:56 PM ET

MONTEREY, California (AFP) - A scientist who mapped his genome and the genetic diversity of the oceans said Thursday he is creating a life form that feeds on climate-ruining carbon dioxide to produce fuel.

Geneticist Craig Venter disclosed his potentially world-changing "fourth-generation fuel" project at an elite Technology, Entertainment and Design conference in Monterey, California.

"We have modest goals of replacing the whole petrochemical industry and becoming a major source of energy," Venter told an audience that included global warming fighter Al Gore and Google co-founder Larry Page.

"We think we will have fourth-generation fuels in about 18 months, with CO2 as the fuel stock."
