Late Night Music Club: The Wallflowers, One Headlight

crooksandliars - Sat, 12/02/2023 - 23:00

Jakob Dylan, son of Bob Dylan, definitely inherited his father's songwriting talent. When I heard this song, I remember thinking that there would be a lot more coming from him. And while the band is still performing, they did go through a major overhaul and just never got back, which is unfortunate. This is their official video, remastered in HD, from October 2009.

5th Circuit Orders Texas To Remove Buoys From Rio Grande

crooksandliars - Sat, 12/02/2023 - 13:31

A federal appeals court upheld a lower court ruling yesterday ordering Texas to remove the buoys installed in the waters of the Rio Grande, stating the state violated laws governing navigable waterways by placing the barriers along the border. Via The Hill:

In affirming an earlier ruling, the 2-1 decision from the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found the lower court properly considered “the threat to navigation and federal government operations on the Rio Grande as well as the potential threat to human life the floating barrier created.”

The floating buoys cover 1,000 feet in the Rio Grande with anchors in the riverbed. They are arranged in a chain stretching up- and down-river, each separated by a rounded blade with serrated edges similar to a circular saw.

The buoys were put in place around July 10, installed just days after four migrants, including an infant, drowned trying to cross the river. In August, authorities found a body floating near the buoys.

Fruitcake! Are You Pro Or Con?

crooksandliars - Sat, 12/02/2023 - 13:30

[It's a midday open thread with a discussion of fruitcake. Let us know in comments if you're pro or con fruitcake, and what is your favorite holiday baked good. -- eds.]

Jeffrey Miller, Colorado State University

Nothing says Christmas quite like a fruitcake – or, at the very least, a fruitcake joke.

A quip attributed to former “Tonight Show” host Johnny Carson has it that “There is only one fruitcake in the entire world, and people keep sending it to each other.”

It’s certainly earned its reputation for longevity.

Two friends from Iowa have been exchanging the same fruitcake since the late 1950s. Even older is the fruitcake left behind in Antarctica by the explorer Robert Falcon Scott in 1910. But the honor for the oldest known existing fruitcake goes to one that was baked in 1878 when Rutherford B. Hayes was president of the United States.

Wisconsin Unions File Lawsuit To End Scott Walker's Folly

crooksandliars - Sat, 12/02/2023 - 13:01

Seven Wisconsin unions have joined forces and filed a lawsuit seeking to be made whole by ending the failed right wing experiment of Act 10, Scott Walker's legacy of attacking public sector workers by forbidding their collective bargaining rights::

The lawsuit, filed by the teachers and other public workers on Thursday, alleges that the law's exemption of some police, firefighters and other public safety workers from the bargaining restrictions violates the Wisconsin Constitution’s equal protection guarantee. The complaint notes that those exempted from the restrictions endorsed Walker in the 2010 gubernatorial election, while those subject to the restrictions did not.

Plaintiffs include the Abbotsford Education Association, AFSCME Local 47, AFSCME Local 1215, Beaver Dam Education Association, SEIU Wisconsin, Teaching Assistants Association Local 3220 and Teamsters Local 695.

The groups said they are filing the lawsuit now because of the "dire situation that exists in our workplaces."
