[uruknet.info] Israel prevents young Gazan from studying law in West Bank

Sun, 06/03/2012 - 04:00
June 2, 2012 - Last Wednesday morning, for just under an hour, Israel's High Court heard arguments about whether or not five women from Gaza should be able to travel to their studies at Birzeit University in the West Bank. In a watershed moment for Gisha, which has brought no less than three similar cases in its seven years of existence, and for the first time in 12 years since a ban on travel for students between Gaza and the West Bank was first imposed, the court actually instructed the state to reconsider its position. That is, reconsider it for four of the five women....

Sun, 06/03/2012 - 01:49

The family-owned company is one of the world's top three manufacturers of construction equipment, and a symbol of British manufacturing strength. But new evidence uncovered by War on Want has exposed the direct sale of JCB military equipment to the Israeli army for use in the violation of Palestinian human rights, and to support the illegal Israeli Occupation....

Sun, 06/03/2012 - 01:38
June 2, 2012 -- A man died on Friday evening after being injured earlier in the day by an Israeli airstrike on the Gaza Strip, medics said. Naji Qudeih, 34, was one of four people injured when Israeli aircraft bombed an auto rickshaw east of Khan Younis, hours after an Israeli soldier and Palestinian militant were killed in an exchange of fire along the border. Qudeih, from Khan Younis, was critically wounded and later died from his injuries, medical services spokesman Adham Abu Salmiya said...

[uruknet.info] Israel: It's called fascism

Sun, 06/03/2012 - 01:35
June 1, 2012 - Our elders used to say that if something looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and walks like a duck - then it's a duck. Similarly, it is possible to say that if a state acts like a fascist state, legislates fascist laws, its spokespersons speak using fascist terms and some of the population responds in a fascist manner - then such a state is fascist. For numerous years I warned against use of the word "fascist" in defining the state of Israel. The Israeli regime is first and foremost a colonial regime, moved by colonial considerations of excluding the indigenous population and taking over their country and lands. The use of the term fascism served to soften the colonial character of the Zionist project and of the state of Israel. There exists no doubt, of course, that the Zionist state did not lose its colonial essence but on the contrary, deepened even further the character traits it shares with states such as Rhodesia, Australia of the 18th and 19th century and the United States in its conquest of the west. However, Israel underwent processes which today justify also defining it as a fascist state....

[uruknet.info] Several Civilians Wounded in NATO Attack on Northern Kosovo

Sun, 06/03/2012 - 01:31
June 1, 2012 - At least five ethnic Serbian civilians and two NATO soldiers were wounded today when NATO forces moved against protesters who had set up a roadblock in northern Kosovo. NATO started with tear gas and rubber bullets, and eventually resorted to live rounds against the protesters, who responded with pistol fire. The roadblocks issue has been going on since last fall, when the Kosovo government banned all trade with neighboring Serbia and sent NATO troops to the border to ensure that ethnic Serbs were no longer able to ship goods out of the nation. The Serbs responded with roadblocks along the supply routes in protest, and have rebuilt as fast as NATO could destroy them...

[uruknet.info] Military Resistance 10E21: Repulsed

Sun, 06/03/2012 - 00:59
June 1, 2012 - I guess the only photos we will now have of this (Afghanistan) war are those that the military propaganda machine wants you to see, and those that the press are allowed to publish, each decidedly with its own agenda, both of which are on opposite extremes ("Marine general bans soldiers in Afghanistan from taking photos outside the wire," Forums, May 20). Way to go, military. I guess we will get the neat little sanitized version of your wars, where everything is going swell and we are meeting all objectives. (The general's) actions speak of censorship of the highest order....

[uruknet.info] Checkpoint Cheek: Confronting Israel's Green Line Racism

Sun, 06/03/2012 - 00:54
June 1, 2012 - In late March, Umm al-Hieran resident and Israeli citizen 'Abdesallam Abu al-Qi'an resolved to practice some checkpoint cheek on the armed Israeli soldier stationed at the Green Line border crossing of Shani, in the Negev. The permanently staffed crossing is named after the Israeli Jewish settlement that straddles the Green Line with a nonchalance that suggests its residents' obliviousness to the fact that a good chunk of them sit in the West Bank, and in transgression of international law. 'Abdesallam invited me to see him. His aim was to confront the racism he encounters in oft unsuccessful attempts at crossing into Israel from the West Bank on his return from Jerusalem, where he works....

The Form contains detailed personal and family questions such as "any of your relatives was member in Baath party" and other sectarian questions. [uruknet.info] UN Report Faults Canada on Torture Renditions

Sat, 06/02/2012 - 23:11
June 1, 2012 - A new report by the UN Committee Against Torture is blasting the Canadian government for its refusal to take seriously their complicity in the extraordinary renditions of Canadian citizens to third party countries for torture. The report in particular urged Canada to resolve the outstanding issues surrounding the Iacobucci Inquiry. In this affair, three Canadian citizens were sent abroad to Egypt and Syria and tortured. Canadian officials falsely told the Egyptian and Syrian governments that the captives were "terrorist threats," which the inquiry showed led to their torture....

[uruknet.info] Hope Burning

Sat, 06/02/2012 - 23:06
June 1, 2012 - So now we have Rambo Obama, a steely warrior who, according to a lengthy leaked insider account in The New York Times, hurls death-dealing drones at anyone who threatens the good old USA. Including children. Those children are presumed guilty by virtue of proximity, and the Times plays along, not even modifying a targeted terrorist with the word "alleged," as once had been the paper's convention: "When a rare opportunity for a drone strike at a top terrorist arises-but his family is with him-it is the president who has reserved to himself the final moral calculation."...

[uruknet.info] Get ready for a Bedouin uprising

Sat, 06/02/2012 - 18:50
June 1, 2012 -The "Law for Bedouin Settlement in the Negev," which the Knesset is expected to pass soon, has angered the entire Bedouin population in the south - one-fourth of all the Negev's residents - and threatens to drive them to violence. Although the state dealt harshly with Bedouin in the past by moving them from place to place, confiscating their flocks, destroying their homes and even spraying their crops with poison, its actions never resulted in an uprising, perhaps because these violations were small-scale: a family here, a clan there. The proposed law, on the other hand, will adversely affect almost all the 200,000 Bedouin in the Negev. It will do so in two ways: by rejecting their claims to ownership of most of their property, and by destroying the homes of some 20,000 families, who will be transferred to undeveloped plots in "authorized" locations....

[uruknet.info] Iraq snapshot - June 1, 2012

Sat, 06/02/2012 - 18:16
June 1, 2012. Chaos and violence continue, the political crisis continues, Nouri stands with two buddies, Iraqi women continue to suffer, a court gives the US State Dept four months to comply with an order, and more... Last month the Interfaith Council for Peace & Justice explained: For Iraqi citizens, especially women, the ongoing violence caused by the U.S. invasion is not the only consequence that has become part of the everyday struggle to rebuild their country. Before the U.S. invasion, 75% of Iraqi women had college degrees, and 31% of Iraqi women had graduate degrees (compared to 35% of European and U.S. women). Only 10% of women in Iraq now continue to work in their professions, and they have to contend with the thousands of more experience and better-educated Iraqi women who fled Iraq at the onset of the war and are now returning. However most women stay away from their work, schools, and universities due to extreme safety concerns: Since the beginning of the war, rates of abductions and kidnappings targeting women and girls, most often related to sex trafficking, female suicides and honor killings have increased. It was beneficial to the US government's aims to scare the Iraqi people into submission...

[uruknet.info] The Trembling Voices of Those Terrorized by America's Drone Campaign

Sat, 06/02/2012 - 05:54
June 1, 2012 - The voices you are about to hear belong to individuals the United States may soon kill or maim - whether with clear-eyed intention as pinpoint targets or by mistake. They belong to those who have - for years - been terrorized by our country, those who continue to be terrorized by our country, those who are bereaved and fearful and paralyzed because of our country. They are voices belonging to drone attack survivors from the village of Datta Khel in the Pakistani region of North Waziristan, voices collected by the U.K. human rights group Reprieve and included in a lawsuit filed against the British government for aiding America's unaccountable and illegal drone campaign. They are silent, trembling voices - voices we don't hear often (if at all)....

[uruknet.info] Starving and Broke: Yemen's Renewed 'War on Terror'

Sat, 06/02/2012 - 05:39
June 1, 2012 - The next phase will be decisive one for Yemen. It will either take the country a step forward towards real reforms - which should resolve some of the country's most protracted regional strife and confront the rampant inequality - or leave it to suffer a worse fate than that under Saleh's family. The early signs are worrisome, compelling regional experts to warn that Yemen may be heading the same route as Somalia....The humanitarian crisis in Yemen is largely rooted in the fact that the country is an open field of competing interests, making it susceptible to corruption, exploitation and terror. To be spared hunger, Yemen must regain its independence - not through a new flag and national anthem, but through an inclusive national program that reaches out to all sectors of Yemeni society: the disfranchised, neglected south, the war-scarred north, and the rest of the country with its chronic inequality...
